From 2001, Ulf studied biochemistry at the Martin-Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Germany. In his diploma he conducted laboratory experiments to optimize recombinant expression of Wnt-proteins in E. coli, conducted at the Bioprocess Engineering Laboratory of Prof. Neubauer, University of Oulu. He got interested in a mathematical understanding of biological processes and turned to Systems Biology, which brought him to the Systems Biology and Bioinformatics Laboratory (SBI) of Prof. Wolkenhauer at the University of Rostock. He finished his dissertation at the SBI in 2013 about mathematical modeling of stressosome mediated general stress response in B. subtilis.
Ulf is part of iAMB since 2015 and uses mathematical models and metabolic flux analysis to study and optimize the metabolism of S. cerevisiae and H. polymorpha. The goal is to generate strains that can be developed for industrial setting with high production of mono-, and dicarboxylic acids.
