From 2013 to 2016 Kristina studied environmental sciences at the University of Greifswald. She wrote her bachelor thesis in the Microbial Ecology Group on the isolation of bacteriophages from limnic waters.
In 2016, Kristina moved to the RWTH Aachen University for the master's degree in ecotoxicology. In her final thesis in the Environmental Chemistry group she dealt with the biodegradability of hydrophobic substances in water-sediment systems.
Afterwards she went for a research internship at the State Key Laboratory of Pollution Control and Resource Reuse in Nanjing, China. There she investigated the influence of oxygen on the biodegradation of environmental pollutants in the rhizosphere of constructed wetlands.
Since 2019 Kristina has been working on her PhD at the Institute of Applied Microbiology on the topic of soil microbes and plastic degradation in the iMulch project. Besides biodegradation and the biotechnological use of plastic waste, Kristina is also interested in the influence of plastic particles on the microbial community of the soil.
