During both his Bachelor and Master Studies Philipp Demling majored in Molecular and Applied Biotechnology with a focus on process engineering and industrial biotechnology at RWTH Aachen University. In 2016 he graduated as Master of Science with a thesis in the group of Prof. Jay Keasling at the Joint BioEnergy Institute in Berkeley, CA, USA working on strain engineering and growth optimization for an improved biofuel production.

Philipp Demling started his PhD at the iAMB in November 2017. He is working in the project “Integrated Biotransformation and Separation for the Production of Valuable Compounds in a Novel Multiphase Loop Reactor” (InBioSep), in which an innovative reactor setup with in situ product removal is developed and an according microbial fermentation process for the sustainable production of rhamnolipids is established. Philipp combines methods of bioprocess engineering and process-guided host strain engineering to set up a lab-scale pilot plant.

The highly interdisciplinary, BMBF-funded project is carried out in close collaboration with the Department of Chemical Engineering, Fluid Process Engineering (AVT.FVT), RWTH Aachen University and the Institute for Food and Resource Economics (ILR), Bonn University.
