The joint project PRODIGY (process-directed drug generation in yeast) funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is located in the area of production of medically relevant natural products.
The project aim is to engineer the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae into a suitable host for the production of polyketides and nonribosomal peptides. Many of these compounds are so far accessible only through their natural producers, which rarely meet the industrial requirements. The yeast is generated applying an integrated process development approach that takes into account process engineering, biotechnological and economic aspects.
In addition to the iAMB, the project involves the three chairs of Bioprocess Engineering, Technical Biochemistry and Technical Biology of the TU Dortmund University and the Lead Discovery Center GmbH. The project is coordinated by Prof. Markus Nett (TU Dortmund).
